The United States central bank lowered borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year during financial volatility originating from the government closure and trade duties.
Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank
The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes
In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Price increases has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.
Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions
The Fed usually analyzes labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs created to the market and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in the previous month.
The number of positions created to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.
Private Data Indicate Ongoing Slowdown
Though BLS was set to publish September’s employment data in early October, it suspended its release when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said earlier this month, which he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise
Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are rising, although slowly. Costs rose 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
