The Trump phenomenon's most illuminating and defining moments – not its most significant, nor most brutal, nor most threatening, nor most foolish, but potentially its most enlightening – occurred earlier this fall. In the course of a few weeks, the nation's leader commenced revealing everyone his designs for an ornate dance hall double the dimensions of the White House and subsequently started independently demolishing the eastern section to build it.
He has performed deeds countless times more severe – the present calculation of casualties due to his slashing to international aid is 600,000 and growing, and presently an analysis forecast his petroleum strategies would kill 1.3 million more. But nothing as definitional. No former leader would have dared – really, no former commander would have conceived – unilaterally destroying major areas of the presidential residence to construct a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the enthusiastic participation of numerous America's wealthiest, nearly all of which have business with federal agencies.
We moved from 'the humble will receive the Earth' to 'the meek shall die from cholera'
As disorienting as it is to watch the leader seek to颠覆 the traditional concept about democracy and substitute it with its polar opposite, there exists a significant segment among Americans who might not perceive it totally unfamiliar. That is those of us – among senior generations a near majority – who were brought up within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have witnessed across decades while conservative evangelical congregations converted the Savior we were raised with into exactly the opposite of who we understood him to be. Essentially, they transformed an image of love into an icon of animosity who approves specifically the brutality that he denounced in scripture; this change developed at a slower pace, across decades instead of months, but it is nonetheless disturbing in the same ways, a confusing personal impact for numerous individuals.
A Toxic Christianity Establishes Itself
Therefore allow me to outline the Jesus from my childhood, as conceptually the Savior is the core of any Christian faith, and because the rapidly expanding group among Americans might have little sense of him because they identify as non-believers or uncertain individuals or nones. I raise no objection with these various perspectives, nor with different religions; but I do think that exist valuable insights of significant worth in biblical accounts.
It is decidedly not the narrative of an authoritative monarch appearing; conversely, a child comes into the world to displaced parents in an automotive shelter, who are forced to hastily depart to a foreign land to evade secret police. The baby grows up in humble circumstances, a laboring woodworker; his message concerns compassion for fellow humans, particularly for the disadvantaged – not simply tender feelings, but practical compassion, expressed by feeding and sheltering. The Savior's reaction to hostility is to present the other cheek – not as a gesture of submissive tolerance, but as a means to teach the assailant; his crime policy states that when an individual takes your jacket you should give him your sweater too.
The evident and direct truth that the Savior of the gospels calls for a type of profound affection centered on the poor has consistently rendered Christianity something of a controversial faith: engaging for the masses, but because of its intrinsic extremism needing to be controlled. In the 1950s it was restrained through watering down – The Protestant faith was so widespread that it practically blessed current circumstances.
A Struggle for the Highest Within Us
Hence I have become heartened to observe the determined opposition against Trump develop during the previous year. It has provided great solace to help build the campaign that has demonstrated publicly through repeated demonstrations, and appears to have motivated citizens to turn out in significant amounts during minor elections. We must have to maintain it, and through comparable resolve, featuring US banners during all protests and appeals to the best parts of American history.
We're going to be asked ... about how you treated the immigrant? Did you welcome them and embrace them or reject?
The nation is most protected, in other words, through connection to the highest in US heritage, similar to Christianity is optimally secured by relationship to that which renders it special and wonderful, particularly the pattern of Christ. In both situations does it imply acting as if the most damaging of both America and religious tradition did not happen; it represents both humility and faith, a blend that committed national faithful ought to accept.
