A shadow market for unapproved slimming drugs is propelled by social media fitness personalities and sellers on messaging platforms, according to new investigations.
Investigational Treatment Gaining Traction Online
Retatrutide, which remains in research studies, is being promoted by social media influencers for its alleged fat-burning properties. Followers are encouraged to contact these profiles privately for supplier links, while also receiving discount codes.
Thriving Commerce on Social Networks
Additionally, a robust market exists on Telegram, where groups with thousands of participants share comparison photos, injection guides and claims of rapid British shipping. Sellers promote the drug there before directing buyers to WhatsApp for transactions.
Understanding The Experimental Drug
Retatrutide is an experimental injection created by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The treatment affects three gut hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, GIP and glucagon. Preliminary studies suggest it could help patients reduce up to a quarter of their total weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the drug is being promoted online as the next Ozempic.
Healthcare Experts Express Concerns
Nevertheless, physicians and chemists have warned that the sale of what is still an unapproved medication in the United Kingdom is a cause for concern and could lead to individuals injecting products of unknown origin.
Some professionals stated the popularity for the experimental drug could be connected to the rising cost of approved weight loss treatments such as Mounjaro.
Regulatory Status and Enforcement
Marketing the unapproved drug on social media or messaging apps is prohibited in the United Kingdom, as it is an unapproved drug that cannot be promoted or distributed for personal consumption under the British medical regulations.
Some influencers attempt to circumvent the regulations by calling to the substance as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a controlled drug, but promotion and distribution can still breach pharmaceutical, advertising, and consumer regulations, risking penalties, legal action or imprisonment.
Platform Reaction and Content Removal
According to the social media company, the platform has removed violative content and prohibited associated hashtags and search suggestions. The company said it was committed to keeping the platform secure and investing in enhancing enforcement strategies.
Digital Marketplace Activities
Research also found groups with up to 9,000 participants selling the experimental drug using the platform's integrated search feature, which operates like a public directory. Typing “retatrutide” immediately brings up groups with thousands of members, filled with photos of slimming results, glowing testimonials and detailed instructions for preparing or administering at home.
After moments of joining one group, a vendor posted contact information, where most purchases take place. The vendor provided an guidebook and promised shipping within 48 hours. When questioned whether the product was genuine, one seller said: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a photo of a supposed laboratory certificate. Not one asked about weight, health issues or previous experience.
Item Details and Costs
Inside these communities, posts display dark colored packages with postal service labels, stating to contain new batches. One message stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Customers can select between dry substance containers, mixed at residence with purified liquid, or ready-to-use pens typically sold at £160 for 20mg. When questioned how much time a pen should be used, sellers give contradictory responses varying between a few weeks to “depends on your body”.
Platform Moderation and Safety Actions
A spokesperson for the messaging service stated it regularly moderated harmful content on its service including material that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization added that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Medical Expert Cautions
“Individuals are administering substances they can’t verify. Although the science behind retatrutide is valid, these digital versions may not include what they claim,” stated Jason Murphy, the head of pharmaceutical services at a pharmacy service.
A medical professional of an online medical service connected the surge in demand to recent cost increases for approved weight-loss medications such as Mounjaro. “With prices increasing, individuals are using online platforms. But fake treatments are highly risky. You can’t be certain what’s contained or whether the environment they were made in was clean,” she explained.
Her staff has already encountered individuals injured by personal administration from unverified sources. “We recognize the disappointment, but buying from Telegram or WhatsApp is gambling with your health,” said the doctor. “These materials could be contaminated or improperly measured.”
Manufacturer Statement
A spokesperson from the pharmaceutical company said retatrutide was in phase 3 research studies and had not been reviewed or approved by any government authority anywhere in the world. “Therefore at this point no one can market [it] for personal consumption,” they explained, adding that any product “misleadingly claiming itself as a Lilly experimental substance not yet authorized … may subject patients to potentially serious health risks”.
